Marvel Comics’ editor-in-chief, Joe Quesada is honoring President Elect Barack Obama in an upcoming Obama-Spidey issue of the popular comic book. Quesada decided to give Obama a “shout-out back” because in his youth Obama collected Spider-Man comics. Obama also collected Conan the Barbarian and was a fan of Superman. He even had a photo with a Superman statue on his Senate web site.
“How great is that? The commander in chief to be is actually a nerd in chief,” Quesada said. “It was really, really cool to see that we had a geek in the White House. We’re all thrilled with that.”
In the issue Peter Parker, Spider-Man’s alter-ego, is photographing the inauguration and notices there are two identical Obamas. Spider-Man uses basketball to determine the real Obama, punches out the imposter and Obama thanks him with a fist-bump.
Marvel expects to sell out of this issue because they’ve devoted half of the covers to Obama. You can get your own copy of the Obama issue as a bonus in Marvel Comic’s Amazing Spider-Man #583, available at your friendly neighborhood comic book store on January 14, 2009 for $3.99.
