Beneath a Christmas Moon

Beneath a Christmas Moon is a remarkable anthology of paranormal suspense Christmas stories. Each of the three stories is unique and intriguing. I love each of them for their uniqueness and creativity. Not one of these stories is what you would expect in a Christmas anthology. I highly recommend this book.

In Lander’s Moon by Eden Robins, Selena Alvarez is a healer but she made the mistake of dating the wrong man and is now fleeing for her life. Lander Paletsos found Selena and brought her to his home. Lander is a reclusive writer and more than a regular man. Lander has a terrible secret that will probably drive Selena away when she learns of it. The character of Lander is a tormented, alpha male who has been forced to live a solitary life because of his “affliction.” Selena’s character is a genuinely caring, kind healer who seeks to bring peace and healing to every life she touches. The romance is quick but inevitable. But the path isn’t smooth; there is the issue of Selena’s abusive boyfriend. Selena and Lander need a Christmas miracle, will they find it?

I loved Lander’s Moon! The reader will fall in love with Lander and Selena and hate Todd the abusive boyfriend. Ms. Robins is able to invoke a range of emotions and feelings for these characters in a very short number of pages. The timeframe around Christmas makes the story even more special. There is always something heart warming about a story with Christmas as the backdrop and the expectation that a Christmas miracle is possible. But if you are expecting to have a restful, sweet romance, nope! This story is also a suspense and there is definitely an evil force that must be defeated if Selena and Lander are going to get their Christmas miracle. This is a wonderful story to read curled up in your favorite chair with a hot cup of hot chocolate and the warmth from a fire in the fireplace. Just be sure and have a coaster handy to set that cup on when the action picks up!

In Paradise Designs by Ariana Dupré, Tara Simms is a psychic that has spent her life trying to suppress and deny her powers. Lately the voices have been getting louder and now she has seen a physical ghost in addition to hearing voices. David Blake is a salesman extraordinaire; he has successfully sold many different things but now he has the challenge of selling condo units in a haunted building. David and Tara meet and the attraction is immediate and intense. Both react with behavior that is out of the norm for them; David by asking Tara for a date as soon as he meets her and Tara by accepting. David is intrigued by paranormal and when he figures out that Tara can see the ghost he wants her to use her “gift” to try to help the ghost. Tara is scared to death that if she uses any of her powers it will change her forever and this “gift” isn’t something she wants to live with. Can Tara and David figure out how to help the ghost? By trying to solve the crime are they putting themselves at risk of being the next target for the killer? Can Tara and David find something meaningful and lasting in their attraction to one another?

WOW. Paradise Designs is also a wonderful story; I just loved it! Because this is a short story it is always difficult to “meet” the characters and care about them in so few pages. Also the author is forced to have a relationship develop extremely fast if it is going to happen in the story. Ariana Dupré does it very well. Within pages you like both Tara and David and want them to get together and solve the mystery at the same time! I did want to knock Tara over the head a time or two and tell her to relax and accept her gifts but she is very stubborn. David is a dreamboat from the very beginning. His ready acceptance of Tara’s gifts is so sweet and should be so comforting for Tara. But this isn’t just a sweet romance, oh no; the story is also full of action and suspense and if Tara and David don’t figure out what is going on someone will be hurt. Paradise Designs is set during the Christmas season but that doesn’t play a major role in the story, it is just the timeframe for the story. Although Tara and David do go Christmas shopping to relieve stress; hey that works for me! This story isn’t a restful read so if you didn’t finish your hot chocolate with the first story in this anthology you might want to drink up before you start this one. This story might even call for some eggnog with extra “flavoring” ingredients.

In Vampire’s Christmas Carol by Karen McCullough, Carol Prescott runs into a ditch in a freak snowstorm and makes her way to the only house around. Michael Carpenter lives in the house but tells Carol she is in more danger in the house than she would be freezing outside in the storm. The problem is Michael is a dying vampire. He wants to die and in order to die he needs to survive the night without drinking human blood. Carol will be a tremendous temptation and in grave danger if he is unable to maintain control over his blood lust. Will Carol survive the night or will Michael give in and kill her in order to continue to live?

Well I didn’t expect to read a spooky Christmas story but that is just what Ms. McCullough has created! The story is one impossible situation after the other and someone is going to die. Whoa, not at all what I was expecting! Vampire’s Christmas Carol is exceptionally well done because not only are Carol and Michael faced with an impossible situation but they are also attracted to one another. So the surviving person may feel tremendous guilt and anguish at the loss of the other person. The characters of Carol and Michael are appealing, caring, and admirable souls and the reader will like them both. I couldn’t decide who to root for but knowing it was a Christmas story I was sure that there had to be a solution that would save them both. I believed that something would save them right up to the end of the story…and I can’t tell you what happens! This is a story you just have to read for yourself.

Lander’s Moon by Eden Robins
Selena Alvarez has had her share of guys and this last one takes the cake. After one more hit on her face she has enough and sees what her boyfriend is really like. Alone and frozen she is about to give up when she see a gorgeous, gigantic lion the likes she has never seen before. Something about this lion scares her yet in a weird way comforts her. It appears he is trying to protect her.

Lander Palestsos is a man torn with grief and has led a cursed life. As a man by day and a beast at night he finds no peace in theblizzard night. Just when he thinks all is quiet he sees Selena almost at deaths door. Something about her beckons him to protect, cherish and most of all for the first time to love. Something so easy to do is getting hard for him and it’s just to hard to pretend that Selena is just another woman to bed. Can he convince her that he is nothing like her ex-boyfriend?

Paradise Designs By Ariana Dupre
Tara Simms does not believe that the new apartment condo she moved into is haunted. She keeps telling herself that yet each time she does she still sees the ghostly woman in the hallway asking for help. Then there’s sexy David Blake making her wish for what it’s like for one to find love with him. Tara is not your usual woman and telling a handsome man as he is that she can see dead people and hear them is not something easy to talk about in this time.

David Blake is a man of many talents and has many women in his life. Yet he never expected a woman like Tara Simms. She is unique, beautiful and knowing that she can see dead people is making her more attracted to him. Though she keeps saying that she is not looking for a man he knows that he is the one for her. Can he help Tara find this ghostly woman’s killer before it finds her?

Vampire's Christmas Carol By Karen McCullough
It is Christmas Eve and all Carol wants to do is get home to her family. Of course just like Carol’s life nothing goes as planned. She gets stranded near her house with her engine not working she stumbles upon Michael’s house. She is amazed that Michael would live in such a big home with all modern things yet is all alone. Many things happen this night, things she never thought were true in this modern time especially vampires. The more she hears about Michaels story one thing keeps coming across to her. He’s courageous and fearless.

Michael has lived a long life as a vampire and this is his last night. It won’t have to be but he is determined not to feed on a human especially one as delectable and beautiful as Carol. Though she is beautiful he knows he can never be the man for her. Or can he? As dawn slowly comes Michael is wondering about the what if’s with Carol. Can he make it till dawn?

Beneath a Christmas Moon is an enchanting tales of heroes that have not had good luck lately and women that will not go away to be with their man. Three great stories that all have such a great story line it is hard not to like each one. They are all paranormal yet each one is different from the typical shape shifting and vampire story. Each one tells about love that they wish they can go through and a life they dreamt of having. I loved them all and any reader will enjoy each story.

“Lander's Moon” by Eden Robins

Selena may have a thing for bad boys but, no way is she going to let one push her around in violence.  When she takes off to escape from her boyfriend into the woods during a snowstorm she recognizes she might die from the elements.  She never expected to be rescued by one of the most gorgeous men she has ever seen.  But, why does she keep thinking it was a lion and not a man that rescued her?  While she is stranded by the storm they both grow closer.  Has Lander finally found the woman to accept him as he is?  And what about Selena’s cruel ex-boyfriend?

Ms. Robins has taken a tough subject of domestic violence and turned the story into one of hope and relationship building.  I thoroughly enjoyed how doing the right thing by escaping turns into the best thing that Selena could ever do. “Lander’s Moon” was well written and I found it to be a heart warming story with a strong message.

“Paradise Designs” by Ariana Dupre

Tara is in a new home and finally seems to be putting her life on track and doing what she wants.  She has always denied her psychic abilities, though they are always on her mind.  She has crafted ways to keep them at bay but, what will she do when she suddenly sees the spirit of a women in her condo that was murdered on the site, prior to the condo’s being built?  Especially since she finally has a neighbor, and boy is he a man she wants to get to know better.  Not only that but David seems to be interested in her also, and doesn’t think she is completely nuts when circumstances take a turn for the worse.  Now is Tara being stalked by a ghost or a real person?

I admit I am not usually fond of stories with ghosts I them but, I must admit that Ms. Dupre crafted a story that both kept me intrigued and on the edge of my seat.  I thoroughly enjoyed “Paradise Designs” and especially her hunky hero.  Hats off to you, Ms. Dupre, for a well written story.

“Vampire's Christmas Carol” by Karen McCullough

Carol is so lost she is not sure what part of the state she is even in.  Blast those detours, and on Christmas Eve to boot.  The problem is that she is the last thing that Michael needs on this night.  This is the last night he has to stay away from human blood to keep from completing the final turn into a vampire.    He has lasted 99 years and 364 days will he be able to last the final one?  At the same time the two seem to be soul mates, but what will they do with no future together?

Karen McCullough has taken a different approach to the current love of vampires in “Vampire’s Christmas Carol”.  Her story is a wonderful look at someone who doesn’t want to be one, and who is willing to do anything to keep from becoming one.  But, in true fate, or bad luck, might just have found his soul mate.  I found this a wonderful suspense and emotion filled story.

Beneath a Christmas Moon has it all for paranormal story lovers.  You have vampires, shape shifters and ghosts all in one little package.  All of the stories center around the power of the full moon, and this one happens to tie together the holiday season as well.  I found all three stories to be very well written and intriguing in their own right.  Whether it is Christmas of summer you will enjoy this anthology and want more from each of these authors.

As the first story in the Beneath the Christmas Moon anthology, Lander's Moon by Eden Robins is somewhat unusual for a romance story in that the theme centers on a pretty serious topic like domestic violence. The author handles that aspect of the story very well, showing sensitivity in not describing the violence itself as much as its impact on the main character. Selena Alvarez is a strong, capable young woman who recognizes and seeks to correct her mistake.  Lander Paletsos is the new love interest she encounters in the woods while fleeing her ex-boyfriend. Lander has his own issues; he is cursed to live his life as a lion at night, an immortal shape-shifting demigod. The chemistry between the two characters was very intense and beautifully written however; it was sometimes overshadowed by combining the two strong themes of domestic violence and the shape-shifter's curse.

In the next tale, poor Tara Simms moves into Paradise Designs Resort & Spas Condos hoping for a change and ending up with a ghost, a murder mystery, but more fortunately for her, a new love interest in David Parker. Paradise Designs by Ariana Dupre was a little slow at the beginning however, inserting the threat to both Tara and the ghost, Lisa, added the needed suspense to keep the reader's attention through the end of the story. Ms. Dupre did a wonderful job with the secondary characters. Her writing style is very quick and witty: she makes excellent use of snappy dialogue to keep the pace flowing, using humor to keep the story from becoming too morbid. I enjoyed this story by its conclusion, and would certainly read other works by the author in the future.

Although Karen McCullough's Vampire's Christmas Carol may have come last in this anthology it was the most memorable of the three: a true "Beauty and the Beast" tale featuring a vampire and a human. Carol Prescott, has an accident and is forced to spend  the night at the home of Michael Carpenter. Unknown to Carol, this is Michael's last night: all he wants is to retain his dignity and die with some vestage of his fading humanity. They ultimately spend the time telling their life stories and getting to know each other while at the same time keeping Michael from succumbing to his vampiric nature. It is a wonderful story, beautifully written, made more poignant by the clock ticking on the time the characters have together. I highly recommend Vampire's Christmas Carol, and will certainly look for other selections from this author in the future.

Staring down at her, Lander was captivated by her pixie features. Soft, feathery midnight black hair spread out fanlike around her, haloing the delicate beauty of her face. She was a petite female. He imagined her having small breasts and a tiny waist, yet with curves in all the right places under the bulky sweater she wore. She looked more ethereal and fragile than the type of female he usually preferred, yet her scent held an allure that was hard to resist. It called to him, somewhere deep in his gut. And if nothing else, he always listened to his gut.

He leaned closer, inhaling her sweet scent, and felt her breath flutter against his whiskers.

Good.

She was still alive but from the blue shade of her lips and erratic pattern of her breathing he knew that could easily change if he didn’t get her somewhere warm, fast. Reining in the lust that raged through him, he bent his head low and nuzzled her chest. As gently as possible Lander clamped his teeth around her sweater. Pulling her up off the ground, he noted that her body remained limp. Arms wide at her sides and legs dangling, she hung like a rag doll from his mouth.

He knew his next actions might hurt her but he had to get her on his back if he wanted to get her someplace safe. But just as he was about to swing her up her whole body jerked. She raised her head and her slightly unfocused gaze found his.

He noticed she had the most incredibly alive eyes he had ever seen. Despite her obvious disorientation her deep, chocolate-brown eyes flamed bright with a kind of inner light not many mortals possessed. If eyes were truly windows to the soul then this female’s soul held the strength and healing light of the sun, moon and stars. He recognized what she was right away.

A healer.

One who cared for the mental, physical and spiritual wellbeing of others.

But as her gaze widened in fear and her mouth opened in preparation for a scream, he knew he needed to focus more on her wellbeing than what he saw in her eyes. He shook his head back and forth quickly, swinging her from side to side. Not hard enough to hurt her, but enough to shake her up a bit and stop her from screaming.

It worked. Lander assumed she fainted as her body went limp once more. At least he hoped she had just fainted. He didn’t think his shake would have killed her, but he hadn’t had much practice calming his prey instead of tearing it apart.

In other circumstances he wouldn’t care if she screamed but the scent of another had reached him and his protective instincts kicked in. The human male’s odor was getting stronger. And something about it didn’t smell right. This male was bad and Lander didn’t want him anywhere near his female.

Lander had no problem fighting for her if he had to. In fact, his first urge was to stand and fight. But considering the woman’s condition, getting her someplace warm and safe was more of a priority. Gazing in the direction he knew the man was heading from, Lander growled around the fuzzy sweater between his teeth. Turning toward home, he carried his female with him.

(See Below for an additional excerpt from my story)

She opened her eyes and looked at the television. A couple kissed in a vacation commercial. She couldn’t even remember what good sex was like. A year of celibacy would do that to you. She watched the man slide his hand down the woman’s back. Tara sighed. If nothing else, she was determined to step out of her self-imposed hibernation and involve herself with a man. What better time to start dating again than on the year anniversary of her failed engagement? With Christmas only a few days away she knew that finding someone she’d like to go out with would be hard but she was determined to keep looking.

The lasagna probably tastes so good because I missed lunch, she reasoned.

Goldstein and Powers International Bank was the most prestigious financial institution on Brickell Avenue. Every day was filled with interesting people. She loved the hustle and bustle of customers coming and going. But today had been torture. Four tellers called in sick with the flu which left the branch severely shorthanded.

I hope I don’t catch it. The last thing she needed was the flu during her vacation next week.

She placed another bite of lasagna in her mouth and glanced at the television. A live shot of her building was on the screen with the caption “Haunted High-Rise”.

What the hell? Grabbing one remote then another with one hand, she turned down the stereo and turned up the television volume. It was a reminder that she needed to have everything working off one remote. A baritone male voice filled the room as the camera angled to include the reporter on the screen.

“Real-estate sales in our area are still on the decline, however, some developers have it worse than others. From the looks of it, Paradise Designs Resort and Spa, with its lush landscaping and unique amenities wouldn’t be one of those places. Unfortunately, that’s not the case. You may remember our previous reports during the construction of the elaborate high-rise where many of the construction workers refused to return to the job site after experiencing what some considered ghostly encounters. Rumors of building materials disappearing or thrown across the room and apparitions of a woman had many of the workers fleeing the building never to return. Despite the management’s attempts to keep the rumors quiet, sales at Paradise Designs are at an all-time low with only seventy of the fifteen hundred condominiums sold. In an attempt to sell the units, management is reducing prices and offering incentives to their current residents. They have hired international marketing and sales guru, David Blake, who recently obtained his Florida realtor’s license, to work with the building’s current realtors to revive interest in this luxury resort and spa. If you’re in the market for a luxurious oceanfront condominium fit for the rich and famous, and you don’t mind living with ghosts, then Paradise Designs Resort and Spa may be for you. Ron Capman, WLDL News, Miami.”

The fork clattered against the ceramic plate as Tara set it on the end table.

This cant be real.

Her best bet was to find a place she could shelter and make a phone call, so she set off. With the sleet still coming down, she made slow progress along the narrow side road, drawn by the beacon of light, until she drew even with it. A paved driveway curved up toward its radiance, passing through a thick stand of trees. She almost broke down and cried when she realized the path led to a house and the yellow glow poured from several windows.

By the time she got to the door, she was soaked, shivering with cold and desperate for the warmth the light promised. She found no bell, but the door featured a heavy, iron knocker shaped like the head of an old man. Marley’s ghost? Wasn’t it on Christmas Eve that Scrooge had seen the face of his old partner in the knocker on his door?

Deciding she was getting punchy with exhaustion and cold, she raised the heavy iron bar of the knocker and banged it several times. Nothing happened, so she repeated the action. Finally, as she prepared for a third assault, the door creaked open. A man stood there, backlit by a lamp in the hall, leaving him almost entirely in shadow.

Her teeth chattered so hard it took an effort to get anything out. “Please, I’m stranded up the—”

“Did Antoine send you?” The aggressive tone as much as the words shocked her into taking a step backward.

“No, my car slid into a ditch.”

He ignored the response. “Tell him it won’t work.” The door closed in her face.

Carol stared at it for a moment, then lifted the knocker bar and began beating it against the base. She had to keep at it for several minutes before the door opened again.

“I need help. I’m freezing out here and my car’s in a ditch—”

“I can’t help you.” The man started to push the door closed again.

Carol stepped forward and stuck her foot in the opening to prevent it. “You have to. Please! I’m going to freeze to death if you don’t help me. Honest to God.” He flinched and she pressed the advantage. “At least let me come in and make a phone call. I assure you I’m harmless. I’m just freezing.”

“Phone lines are down,” he said.

“Hell. And my cell phone’s not getting a signal. Please, can I at least come in and get warm? I’m getting totally desperate. In fact, I’ll just keep banging on your door until you let me in or I collapse.”

He muttered something under his breath, then said to her, “It’s dangerous to come in. You take your life in your hands.”

Help me!

Tara Simms stepped out of the elevator and looked up then down the hallway for the woman who’d shouted. Behind her, the sound of heavy doors sliding together echoed in the corridor. Tara repositioned the takeout container of lasagna and a bag of groceries before grabbing at the purse strap slipping from her shoulder. "Hello. Where are you?"

Silence answered.

Maybe it was an echo from another level that had somehow resonated into the elevator shaft. Then again, as the only resident of the fourteenth floor, she couldn’t help but wonder if someone new had moved in.

Help me, Tara.

She almost dropped her dinner.

The voice that had shouted moments ago was now an urgent whisper echoing through her mind.

"No! Get out of my head!" Tara grumbled, gripping the Styrofoam container and plastic bag. The strap fell from her shoulder to wrist and the purse banged against her legs with every step. She let it hang there and hurried to her condo, counting the square patterns woven into the dark green carpet as she walked.

This couldn’t be happening. Not again. Her pulse raced with fear.

Paradise Designs Resort and Spa, a newly constructed high-rise on Miami Beach, had everything a person could ever want in condo living. Located directly on the Atlantic Ocean it boasted an Olympic sized outdoor pool and smaller indoor pool. The bottom floor housed a mini-mall that included a grocery store, several restaurants, a day spa, a gym and retail outlets.

Close to the Miami nightlife, you could walk to the mall, theater and an array of restaurants and nightclubs. She had been one of the first homeowners, since she knew the developer, and chose an ocean and pool view condo on the actual thirteenth floor, even though builders skipped the number thirteen, unit number fourteen-thirteen specifically to face her fears about the paranormal. She’d thought that choosing a number associated with the woo-woo stuff would keep spirits away and the voices out of her mind since avoiding them had never seemed to work. She even decided to make the number thirteen her lucky number. What a stupid idea that had been.

Sixty-eight, sixty-nine, seventy.

It took exactly ninety steps from the elevator to her front door. She knew it by heart, had counted them every day since she moved in a month ago. But today was the first time she’d heard the whispers over the automatic counting.

At the age of five she had realized that counting things kept the voices quiet. For the past twenty years she’d counted to keep her mind busy and ignore the whispers. It was second nature now, an unconscious habit that was constant and consistent in her daily life. She’d tried to stop once before but hadn’t made it more than a few minutes. Every time she let her mind rest, the whispers got louder and she had no intention of letting that happen. She kept her guard up against the spirit world and that’s the way it would stay.

Tara slowed as she neared her condo. The door to the neighboring unit was propped open with a wooden footlocker. Inside, the room was filled with boxes piled in the middle of the beige carpeted floor.

She couldn’t believe that out of all the empty condos on her floor, someone had chosen the one right next door to her. Maybe it was a woman her age. It was nice to know that there was someone right next door if she needed anything. The realtors could have told the new neighbor her name since they were the only people on the floor. Relief washed over her. Maybe she hadn’t heard a voice in her mind after all.

While she was very independent she found a little comfort in knowing that she was no longer alone on the floor. It would be great to make a new friend at Christmastime.

"Hello? Is anyone home?" She peeked in but didn’t see any large pieces of furniture.

An eerie silence was again the only answer.

I must have heard the new neighbors. They might have taken the stairs down for another box, she thought, trying to convince herself that the voice hadn’t been in her head.

Deep inside she knew it wasn’t true.

Who in their right mind would take thirteen flights of steps down to carry boxes back up? Besides, the woman had called her by name. In all likelihood the realtors wouldn’t have shared her name with someone she didn’t know without introducing them first. She pushed the thoughts aside before she worked herself into a panic. She’d come back after dinner and welcome the neighbors to the building.

Tara passed the open door and unlocked her condo. Tossing her purse on the dining room table, she hit the light switch with her elbow and put everything else on the kitchen counter. She crossed the living room to raise the windows facing the ocean. In the graying dusk she watched a speedboat pass by, its engine humming as the front end thumped against the blue waters of the Atlantic. She worked her way across the ocean view windows and then down the side overlooking the pool area. She really couldn’t have picked a better place. The views were amazing and it was only ten minutes from work.

A man was swimming laps. His tanned body sliced through the water with quick even strokes. As he reached the shallow end he stood, revealing an athletic, muscular upper torso. Pushing his wet hair back he looked up at her.

Tara stepped away from the window. No way could he have seen her, yet she felt as if she’d been caught staring just the same. She didn’t recognize him but then again, she didn’t know everyone who’d purchased here either.

Walking to the corner she pressed the floor control of the six foot Christmas tree with her toe. The white lights sprang to life, shimmering off the silver balls and tinsel. Christmas had always been her favorite time of year despite the fiasco last Christmas Eve when her boyfriend had broken their engagement and had given the ring she’d picked out to another girl. This holiday season was a new beginning. She turned on the stereo and soft instrumental carols filled the air.

In the kitchen she put away the groceries, dumped the lasagna onto a plate, grabbed a fork and canned soda and then took her dinner into the living room. Kicking off her shoes, Tara curled up in the corner of the overstuffed leather couch. She rested the plate on her legs and turned the television to the local news with the volume down.

The lasagna smelled delicious. The flavors seemed to drift with the aromatic scent. She cut a corner off with her fork and slipped it into her mouth, savoring the rich tomato sauce and creamy cheeses. She closed her eyes, letting the texture of the flattened noodles tantalize her taste buds.

Ummm, better than sex.
